Woods End Preserve

While most of our preserves are in North Stamford, one of our gems south of the Merritt Parkway is the Woods End Preserve. This 1.7-acre property was donated to the Land Trust in 1986 and is located adjacent to a private home at 99 Woods End Road. In addition to our holdings, an additional acre of adjacent land owned by our neighbors is protected
through conservation easement, making a total of
nearly 3 acres preserved in the wild state forever.
Befitting its name, the property is entirely wooded
except for the road frontage and a beautiful stream
running along the southeastern portion of the property.
(Note: there is a brief but steep slope from the road
level to the property interior.)

Of course, making and keeping it wild takes some
effort. In 2019, our stewards noted that the road
frontage portion of the property had been taken over
by a stand of Japanese knotweed, a rapidly growing invasive that resembles bamboo and drives out competing native plants. Dumping was also an issue. Beginning then, and continuing to the present day, the Land Trust has worked diligently to restore the property. We have removed the trash. We planted native species that flower and provide food for pollinators. And by repeatedly removing knotweed and cutting it back we gave the natives a fighting chance. While the process will continue for several more years, our concerted efforts are paying off.

We encourage you to visit our preserve and if you would like to volunteer to assist our efforts at Woods End and across our system of preserves, please email us at info@stamfordland.org.
